4 Ways a Digital Classroom Can Benefit Teachers

EdTech and PedTech are revolutionising how we think about teaching and learning.

Starting in 2020, the rise of remote learning has opened up new possibilities for learners, and years later, we are beginning to truly understand how a digital classroom benefits teachers.

But what is a digital classroom, and how can we best use the digital tools available to improve children’s outcomes?

Here are some of our insights!

What is a digital classroom?

Simply put, a digital classroom is a digital learning space.

This learning environment is not confined to a physical room or building, allowing students to engage with their learning anywhere and enhance their understanding through digital tools.

However, this doesn’t mean that digital classrooms are synonymous with remote learning.

In 2024, the starting point of a digital classroom is often the physical classroom!

In this space, digital tools are embedded throughout the curriculum. Students can connect with one another and with teachers digitally, tracking their progress and teacher feedback, and accessing all sorts of learning materials.

Interactive whiteboards and cloud storage are just the start – students are already accessing virtual environments through virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).

The top 4 benefits of a digital classroom

LEO Academy Trust is implementing digital classrooms through a PedTech approach, with plenty of exciting results.

Let’s take a look at some of the biggest digital classroom benefits we’ve found so far.

Avoiding duplication

It’s hard to keep track of all the activities and lesson plans created over the years.

Without a central hub for all previous resources, teachers can often find themselves redoing work that was already available.

The use of cloud storage, a fundamental feature of a digital classroom, can easily solve the problem!

In the academic year of 2018/2019, LEO Academy Trust developed a cloud strategy that included Management Information Systems (MIS) as well as core infrastructure.

This allowed us to create a centralised digital location for all our work and share resources across all schools, improving our efficiency, time management and productivity.

Less admin work

Digital tools allow teachers to reduce time-consuming admin tasks (such as photocopying and trimming worksheets) and focus on what really matters.

Digital activities offer a more effective and streamlined approach to curriculum delivery, so we can spend more time innovating and tailoring our teaching and leadership to the needs of our Trust.

As one of LEO’s headteachers notes in our Impact Report:

“Classroom teachers could focus their energy on front facing work, keyworker children and parents rather than having to worry about finding resources that worked for remote learning”.

Improving progress and understanding

Digital tools allow teachers to tailor and improve their teaching and feedback approach. In the digital classroom, formative assessment and adaptive teaching work together to inform better practice.

In the case of LEO schools, digital tools are particularly effective for sequencing accessibility, improving the understanding of children with SEND.

For example, we observed that learners benefitted from TextHelp’s OrbitNote to support them in breaking down vocabulary they could not understand.

Kahoot quizzes have also been effective in checking specific recall and reading comprehension. Through these tools, teachers can establish understanding before progressing on to further instruction.

Streamlining feedback

Digital classrooms can also help teachers streamline their feedback, making their comments more accessible and actionable.

We employ a number of digital tools for a better approach to feedback, including Mote, which gives personalised verbal feedback to learners in the form of voice notes on Google and Adobe products.
